At least a couple of lawyers here in the states have gotten themselves in trouble by using ChatGPT in writing their briefs. It made up cases and case-law that didn't exist. Evidently the lawyers never checked, or assumed the judge would never do so.

No it doesn't, though some seem to think of it as a feature, not a bug

Good bread is one of the great things of the universe. On the other hand I had so much sourdough thrust upon me in the 8 years I lived in CA (as if no other bread existed) that it will be several lifetimes before I am willing to eat it again.

I have to say that, when Tom Shippey said that he knew people with degrees in Classics who did not know the difference between a past participle and a gerundive, I was quite relieved not to be one of the people he was talking about.

This could be the beginning of "who's on first" type conversation between Merry (Abbott) and Pippin (Costello).

It's interesting how much that shift underlines the whole "men are weak" message that runs through the films. In the books it's a great story told afterwards, and the message is the leadership of A, who brings living men to the Pelennor.

So, @nicholasbirns.bsky.social, I meant to ask you the other day if Tolkien's early Quenya word "kalimbani" (= "Barbary") made you think of Caliban, too.
