Although <doing the math> I guess she wouldn't have been a teen yet when you were writing the book.

I just read Zoe's Tale, and from one middle-aged guy to another, I'd say you just nailed it! 😉 I'm basing that on personal observation of my own daughter, who is just a little past teenage years. How much did you rely on observing your own daughter's attitudes/behaviors in writing the book?

"Conservative" (and "liberal" and "progressive" for that matter) have become labels and pejoratives that have little or nothing to do with the actual, original meanings of the words, so the old tropes don't really fit anymore.

First Spanish/English explorers in California were mid to late 1500s, first Spanish buildings were just before 1700, but the Spanish didn't really get going until late 1700s. The indigenous Californians built mostly (entirely?) in wood, unlike stone/mound construction elsewhere in the Americas.

I've found that Word tends to introduce problematic (and invisible) formatting codes at times -- I tend to just print out the original PDF, scan/OCR it into a fresh PDF, then edit it by hand in Acrobat. When I'm feeling grumpy, I do the scan at really low resolution. . . .

So, is that a better or worse success/accuracy rate than your average human reader? As I've pointed out to my hot-to-use-AI boss, you'll end up wasting *at least* as much time training and verifying the output as you will with your more problematic employees.

I've rarely been blocked, but when it happens, I do like to try to figure out if it was me or them. I tend to have a sharp and sarcastic tongue but don't want to be *unnecessarily* or annoyingly so.

I certainly agree that parents should be the first and most obvious line of defense. Unfortunately, many of them do a poor job of it, even if they try at all. And then all of us have to deal with whatever societal impact results.

There are still a couple topics and people I follow on Xitter who just haven't migrated off the platform yet. I just have to be careful to avoid the "For You" button and the "What's happening" that lead to stress and toxicity.

Depending upon your mail app, there's usually a quick way to add the address to your blocked mail list. For example, in Outlook, if you use the "Report Junk" option it will automatically add the sender's address to your blocked list. Certainly no slower than most "unsubscribe" options.

Using LLMs for anything the least bit detail and accuracy-dependent is a lot like the current use of self-driving cars. Until they are noticeably better than a reasonably skilled human at the activity, they're more harm/cost than benefit.

Great, thoughtful review! "No one wants execution-dependent projects. What studios want to hear is that if they plug this star, this IP, this director into a film, it'll be a guaranteed moneymaker." I think our Pavlovian response as an audience is just as significant -- "Oooh! Avengers 32!!"

Parents monetizing their kids' private lives -- the way this one woman describes -- is just sick and pathetic. For the rest of it, this is just the digital world accelerating information spread for both good and bad. Instead of mom showing your girlfriend your nude baby bath photo in an album. . . .

What gives me a giggle is that he apparently was granted his patent for inventing a "breathing device" that amounts to a short length of hose. But now it's expired and *anyone* can make a fortune manufacturing them! patents.google.com/patent/US432...

Great article! I think cheesball works well with pulpy topics like Conan and Flash (both of which movies I really liked), but Herbert was aiming for something a bit more serious with Dune. (I hate to point out the fiddly bits, but paragraph 7 "Geidi" ought to be "Giedi" Prime.)

My favorite radio station started in 1968 as a "freeform" FM station -- DJs played whatever they wanted. I mourned when it when "classic rock" in the 1990s, but several of the old staff members re-started it as a streaming station about 10 years ago, again as freeform. Variety and depth, FTW!! 😍

... for, I suspect, people who like "familiarity." Rock as a genre runs from some time in the 50s through the present. I love rock, while cordially disliking "classic rock" for this boring repetitiveness.
