This might be the best explanation I’ve seen for the divergence between consumer sentiment and economic data

The abject stupidity of blaming the government for inflation while ignoring historically high corporate profits is really something

Reminds me of my family reunion a few years ago when my conservative relatives were complaining that unemployment was so bad because there were help wanted signs everywhere.

Might not be. Might be a terrible economy, if people are getting better jobs and pay and still feeling times are tough.

Here it is. The layoffs are paying off for those who weren’t affected. You erase a 100k job and replace with 2 50k jobs and now the economy says more jobs were added. Let’s keep seeing how things go

The people who can afford trips to Europe are not the same people actually feeling pain from rising prices. If these are the people OP is talking to then they live in the very definition of a bubble.

Anecdotal evidence is hard though. I have more flour or work and I took a massive pay cut this year, but that doesn’t mean that’s common. For the people in our situation, minority though we are, the increased prices are incredibly challenging

I think people have forgotten how bad high unemployment is. I haven't, there were people killing themselves. But the price gouging, shrinkflation and housing crisis is not very pleasant either.

For the less privileged, I think it has more to do with how slight improvements throw into relief the underlying shittiness of our economic systems.

I’m struggling to keep my home. Someone who’s making trips to Europe right now doesn’t rally track with me or anybody I know.

I've been posting about the disconnect for a while and I have a new piece of the puzzle: Lots of companies are treating the coming year like it will be bad and they are "Belt tightening", even if your own personal situation is fine, you may be concerned about your future more.

And ironic since the government doesn't control prices.

Those experiences don't track with anyone I know. The professional managerial class might be living it up right now, but the rest of us below are not having an easy time of it with housing, groceries, daycare, etc all rising in costs.

every good thing that happens to me is because of me; every bad thing that happens to me is the government's fault. Ah, America.
