It is truly bananas to have a Category 5 hurricane on July 1. And yet, when the sea surface temperatures are at peak season levels already, it was always a possibility. This was always the concern for this season: the waters are so warm that when conditions align, storms can really take off.

I told my 14 year old - remember this storm, first category 4 in June, earliest category 5 - when you're my age (56) - these will probably be fairly common.
