If you’re not seen as a problem, you only (if you’re lucky?) continue to get what you’ve got. Need to put yourself out there to get new things.
Make the library external, not internal.
Turn the library Inside Out. Make everything in the library highly visible

Why did they have to change?
- The human element wasn’t being used as it should (not quite what she said).
- Existing structure was based on a previous historic print requirement. - Pandemic changes used behaviour.
- Change to digital first environment.

Lots about library refurbs. Whole ground floor is social learning space. Books upstairs (same for us). They have a smaller books collection than previous, due to an ebook first policy #CILIPconf24 Yes… but this depends on the ebooks being available and affordable #ebookssos

Academic librarians have huge social capital within our universities. We need to use this. #CILIPconf24 I know this… and yet it is hard to do this properly when so much taken up with the every day. (I was being counselled on this by others in my group at the Library Futures workshop yesterday!)

The library as a learning space, not only a collection space. Space as an enabler for learning, not only student space. Move away from thinking about where students learn to how they learn. Active learning. Shift away from being seen as only an archive or repository. #CILIPconf24

Keynote talking about polarisation between political opinions, extreme increase in USA, but otherwise in Europe.
Convinced by graphs of some countries, but not UK. Sharp increase over the last ~15 years. Fairly parallel to USA. Can't think what that correlates with <sarcasm>

This first workshop finished with group work, selecting two scenarios and plotting them. My group looked at effects of covid on children’s cognitive skills AND public trust in technology. Thinking up to 40 years in the future. Lots of interesting discussion #CILIPconf24

Start with Trends. Because these are things we can understand by their past behaviour. Change in a general direction. #CILIPconf24 Example of increasing use of portable devices for instant web access - asking questions to decide if this is really a trend.

Four ways to think about the future, based on how much uncertainty and agency/control we have. #CILIPconf24 if you have low uncertainty/high control, you can plan for the future. If you have high uncertainty/low control (most public services) then it’s harder.
