The Dutch Republic and the Old Swiss Confederacy were absolutely a product of middle-class opposition to royalism, which came to be called liberalism. NL even had what passed for religious tolerance in that era, before John Locke even wrote the Carolina constitutions, let alone became a liberal.

It's true that both states tended toward greater aristocratic power over the centuries, but "generations later, the Dutch Republic became de facto crowned" is not that big of an own given that the US, again, was a slave state until 1865, by which point CH had had universal male vote for 17 years.
