It's true that both states tended toward greater aristocratic power over the centuries, but "generations later, the Dutch Republic became de facto crowned" is not that big of an own given that the US, again, was a slave state until 1865, by which point CH had had universal male vote for 17 years.

The Dutch Republic and the Old Swiss Confederacy were absolutely a product of middle-class opposition to royalism, which came to be called liberalism. NL even had what passed for religious tolerance in that era, before John Locke even wrote the Carolina constitutions, let alone became a liberal.

R-Haine always loses ground in the second-round polls after the first round, if the left and the center notice it and cross-endorse against it. Happened in the 2017 and 2022 presidentials (but not the 2022 legislatives) and is happening now. Attal is based for doing this over Macron's objections.

For example, black Republicans who allow themselves to be tokenized can get on SCOTUS under this system; under Jim Crow, it was unthinkable. In contrast, Jim Crow didn't mind Republicans if they were part of the system, as when George H. W. Bush ran for Congress on an anti-miscegenation platform.

We're running it at 320 km/h. At 260 km/h, trains are slowed by 2.5 minutes, but the majority of this slowdown is dead letter (the trains would be on dedicated tracks in a shared ROW). We didn't look at the bypass in that much detail. It looks like a 3-minute saving, of which 1 is Wilmington dwell.

On the Northeast Corridor, our draft timetable does New York-Washington in 1:53, stopping once per state. This is with a top speed of 320 km/h; 300 adds a few seconds, whereas 217 km/h, the current upper limit of the catenary on this section, adds 11 minutes.
