An eastern towhee photographed in New York versus one photographed in Florida. Southeastern birds have straw-colored eyes while their counterparts elsewhere have red. #birds

They sure are. Once you see the two species side by side, you'll never really confuse them due to the size difference.

Folks seem to have difficulty differentiating little blue herons from reddish egrets: the little blue is on the left, the reddish on the right. These were taken in essentially the same lighting. Note the lighter colors on the reddish. The reddish is also much larger. #birds

Actually, the kids had already fledged (they were around), so she's probably busy prepping for brood number two for the year.

I had a great uncle who every spring would begin the arduous process of training a chipmunk to jump up on his porch, crawl up his leg, and remove a peanut from his front shirt pocket whenever he called out, "Hey, Shorty!"

Through the tall grass, I spotted a shape looking over its shoulder at me in the distance. I see northern bobwhites almost every day in the preserve, but this is about the best I ever do trying to photograph them. #birds

Gopher tortoises don't have any trouble burrowing in it. I think chipmunks just prefer cooler climates and dryer woodlands.

I doubt it. I think there just isn't enough suitable habitat. Much of the American southeast is largely devoid of them. You can't really find them east of the Appalachians south of Virginia. In Florida only a tiny piece of the western panhandle sees them.

Whenever I make a trip to New York, people ask me what I'd like to photograph. They're often surprised when I respond with "chipmunks would be a nice start." We just don't have them in peninsular Florida.

When I was in New York, there was a mated pair of black-and-white warblers flitting about in the trees nearby the whole week. Unfortunately I was never able to get them in the same frame. #birds

I think it's the slightly downturned beak. It gives it the appearance of frowning. I'm pretty sure it was doing what it loves doing: combing the beach for morsels.

One of these is a Carolina chickadee and the other is a black-capped chickadee. The only truly reliable way to tell them apart is by song, so it's good that their ranges don't overlap much. #birds
