It is honestly amazing that no school district has moved yet to remove football. Any student injury is bad, but it kind of feels like brain damage is directly antithetical to the core mission of a school
at my high school at least, EVERY SINGLE FREAKING KID thought they were going to get an athletic scholarship, mostly for football or basketball
and each year, a few did ... (vast majority didn't)
but, most didn't actually understand that they wouldn't likely be studying all that much
High-school sports is a weird big business. From the company that supplies the uniforms, balls, and other football accessories. They also get a lot of free things from Gatorade. And lots of grants for sports too. It's a real racket
years ago I read a book that expressed they thought it likely that eventually American football would become niche. They said they thought would happen by modern NFL players showing more and more signs of causing long-term damage (maybe even one dying on the field) ...
