#SNCF 🇫🇷 #RGP units were built in the 1950s for long-distance trains, including #TransEuropExpress. They ended their careers on local duties, like #X2722 and #X2745 seen here at Bourg-en-Bresse around 2004. The latter one got an engine room door “second hand”, from a yellow unit.

Earlier this month, #FS #Trenitalia 🇮🇹 ran their last diesel loco hauled passenger train: the services are now being worked by #DMU Diesel Multiple Units. My photo below shows a Class D.445, with the daytime Reggio Calabria to Taranto #InterCity, in February 2015.

Seen yesterday at #Spiez🇨🇭station: the gauge-changing #BLS #MOB #GoldenPassExpress, allowing passengers to travel from #Montreux to #Interlaken on metre gauge and standard gauge tracks without changing trains. This is a push-pull operation with the “Prestige” class cab car leading.

A day out on the #Centovalli🇨🇭 #Vigezzina 🇮🇹 line. The #SSIF #ABe8/8 units, built 1956, are still going strong, including on the #Locarno to #Domodossola “Diretto” services. A “Birra 100”, brewed locally for the line’s centenary and for purchase from the #minibar trolley, comes in handy.

#Brig🇨🇭 to #Domodossola 🇮🇹 earlier today, via the #Simplon railway line on board a #BLS #RABe528 #Stadler #FLIRT “Mika” trainset. The unit comes with a #Bistro area, equipped with vending machines for snacks and drinks and a few tables, creating a sort of @diningcar.at atmosphere.

A somewhat sad sight this (former …) #SNCB #NMBS 🇧🇪 I2 type @_DiningCar, numbered 11911. It was rebuilt for #railtour overnight services for Belgian holiday makers. Occasionally it was also used on international daytime trains. Photo taken ca. 15 years ago at #Raeren, #Vennbahn.

When visiting #Opicina 🇮🇹, a stop at the lovely “Bar alla Tramvia” is always part of our programme. However, once again, there aren’t any trams operating on the line to and from #Trieste, a line which includes a funicular section. Some paperwork is still outstanding, we are told.

Our holidays in #Istria usually come with a visit to the #Parenzana trail. This is a hiking and cycling route, built on the trackbed of the disused #Trieste 🇮🇹 and #Koper 🇸🇮 to #Poreč 🇭🇷 narrow gauge railway line which dates back to Habsburg times. Some mileposts are still there.

#Primolano 🇮🇹 is a small village on the #Trento to #Venice “Valsugana” railway line. It’s got quite a big station building, opened in 1910. How come? Well, for a few years this used to be a border station - with Habsburg #Austria to the West and the Kingdom of #Italy to the East.

Seen earlier today at the Trentino Trasporti museum #TtrAM at #Trento 🇮🇹: narrow gauge unit #ET008, originally built for the #SFD, the Dolomites Railway, in the 1950s. Later used on the Trento - Malé line and finally repainted to its initial colour scheme.

Good morning from #Basel🇨🇭SBB. Spotted a few minutes ago: the #ÖBB 🇦🇹 #nightjet 408 from #Berlin 🇩🇪 to #Zurich🇨🇭with through cars from #Prague 🇨🇿. A very colourful consist, on the last leg to Zurich hauled by two #SBB🇨🇭#Re460 electrics. (Power output: 8,180 hp each.)

#SNCF 🇫🇷 #X2800 railcar “noses” at Saint-Claude. In the early 2000s, this place in the #Jura hills, east of Lyon and not too far from the Swiss border, used to be a refuge for aging railcars working regional services in the area.

Boarding the #IndianPacific 🇦🇺 at #Sydney Central. The train is almost 30 cars long. The 4,352 km long journey to #Perth, on the other end of #Australia, will last 65 hours they say. Plenty of mileage ahead then. And what a beautiful train!

Some long distance #InterCity services to and from #Sydney 🇦🇺 that run over night come with a car which British #HST trainsets don’t have: a First Class #Sleeper, labelled #Daysitter for daytime travels. And there is also a nice @diningcar.at #Buffet service on these lovely trains.

Early morning sees quite a number of #InterCity services coming and going to and from #Sydney 🇦🇺 Central. These services are usually worked by very nice trainsets that look familiar to the British traveller: their design is very close to the #InterCity125 #HST.
