Well the exciting news is that my son (3) has officially watched his first (half) episode of Star Trek. Now granted it was an episode of Enterprise which is not the one I would have chosen but you’ve got to start somewhere.

The weird thing about The prequel trilogy is that George Lucas is a pretty smart but extremely idiosyncratic guy with some kind of weird ideas writing about a waning order. So it’s kind of hard sometimes to tell in which ways the Jedi are bad on purpose.

I would even settle for something like, “yeah, midichlorians are indicative of force potential but it’s actually because they’re just drawn to active force use.” Then it can be a signifier without being some blood purity test.

Good Canada Day Parade, the fire hall brought out a vintage fire truck which was neat. Good use of a pretty big boat as a makeshift float. Special credit to the Taylor Speedway whose float, [a smashed up racecar on the back of a truck with a speaker blasting AC/DC] conveyed a vibe very efficiently.

Really liked Sim ant and Sim Farm even if I never properly understood Sim Farm it was fun to build and watch cows move around. I still think about going back and cracking A-Train which had undeniable appeal but I never really cracked it as a kid.

I feel like there’s a real commonality there. like, kids pick up a lot of the patterns and idioms of communication from imitation before they have all of the logical undergirding. And LLMs are just reading and repackaging sentences with no conception of actual meaning

the thing that really pulled it out for me is there's an episode of Enterprise where they talk about 200 colonists who got really up in arms about earth sending 200 more colonists to the planet. like, guys you need never see them.

I think a thing which, for lack of a better word, plagues Star Trek, Star Wars, really most science fiction, is that human beings are basically incapable of grappling with the actual scale of the earth and, by extension, alien planets.
