Nor does it help with the broader media ratfuck or the people who (sincere or not) bit down so hard on the “OMG the debate was so bad it must be dementia” that there’s no way for them to walk it back to anything sane.

It's a little-mentioned point, overshadowed by panic and excitement, but this episode began with a ratfuck of a debate. No, he didn't do well, yes they agreed to the rules and the moderators, but if he looked like a trapped animal, well, that's basically what he was.
