The FAA: "It is really important to our civilian space program." The plans to use starship to land on the moon requires like a dozen starship launches to fuel the thing up, then it has to land its top-heavy ass onto the moon and get itself back up. It's not happening people.

Appealing to the full panel would be possible!

Yes! And with 13 justices, Congress could allow panel/ en-banc hearings and increase the court’s output (currently only deciding about 60 cases a year). Very strong, indeed!

I’m just saying, the fact the issue freaked Congressional conservatives out so much that they broke with their parties probably is a sign it’s a real, existential threat to conservatism/authoritarianism, and liberals probably shouldn’t forget that.

Yeah. The path is getting more votes than his opponents in enough states to win the electoral college

The fact that the name of the elected Democrat is not in the headline tells me a lot.

It's a little-mentioned point, overshadowed by panic and excitement, but this episode began with a ratfuck of a debate. No, he didn't do well, yes they agreed to the rules and the moderators, but if he looked like a trapped animal, well, that's basically what he was.

They've had nine years, and Joe Biden's only been his opponent for four of them. You really think that would do the trick? Would they finally get around to asking why he disrespected a 4-star general last week, or would this only be new things he says going forwards?

This is an indictment of the press. I mean, if you think the press would be covering things responsibly if Biden's people said they should cover these important things, or if Biden wasn't in the race, that's fine, but I think their behavior the past eight years suggests otherwise.

I'm not saying he didn't bomb, but how much of it was because of age... I think it's all being boiled down to that and it's not the whole story. The reemergence of a bad stutter isn't a classic sign of aging, but is something that happens when people get nervous.

It was such a strange, artificial environment. I didn't know what I was seeing - in my eyes it looked as much like he got nervous about how the first question or two went/ by the fact the rules meant he sat through a minute and a half of outrageous nonsense and had no good opportunity to refute it.

In the 90's when I was a kid, there was a Child's Play marathon on Fourth of July, that I think was immortalized for my sister and I because we taped it on VHS/ saw the Independence Day-themed promo commercials multiple times afterwards. So now it just seems like it fits.

This is a passage that stands out. The idea the press lionized someone (Wagner) completely undeserving, because it it more conveniently fits with what they want to be true should be familiar to anyone who's turned on political coverage in the past decade.

The person who shouts a question at Biden and makes him look like fool in response, accelerating or helping lead to his departure very much seems like a position attainable and waiting to be filled, and comes with rewards. Shout a question to Trump about Jeffrey Epstein and see what effect you have

The long-idealized Watergate series by Woodward and Bernstein is legendary because the president was eventually forced to resign. Lots of people found lots of important, grave details about Trump. And none of them are remembered like that.

Yes, there's also lots of ideology built up around journalism. The Pierce family from Succession draws on real life. Privilege and elitism and arrogance. And there are profit motives drawing media companies to conservationism. Lots of forces beyond the individual reporters. But they've been trained.

I'm nearing the end of The Power Broker. The NY press continues to stand out in this reread, and I think says something about today Donald Trump does not respond to criticism voiced by the press. They have no hope of having an effect on him with their reporting. That makes it uninteresting to them.

I can't see a scenario where the GOP doesn't wildly attack any nominee and the press doesn't report it breathlessly. She'd have the experience of being president going into the election if Biden resigned and Democrats would have an internally-consistent logic as to why she is the nominee.

I expect it's less that and more Biden wants to see a majority of Dems in Congress call for it before coming out for it himself. He's a guy who, if nothing else, understands presidential power, and what happened in the 30s. A POTUS saying the SCOTUS "undermined the rule of law" still pretty strong

And I bet a solid portion of reporters have always recognized this. It's probably why they liked talking about it so much. The cynicism and savvyness they enjoy so much has been clear as day.

I mean, he has been, but only to the extent necessary to prevent the loss of power. That's the purpose of it. Obergefell or only-partly gutting the ACA were the t-bone steaks thrown by a cartoon bandit to the guard dogs to keep them from defending the house.

Exactly. “Hey, we saw you were only getting through 60 or so cases a year - here’s a slew of new justices and law allowing panel rulings. We will publicly pretend to ignore the partisan capture of the court, which this will also fix.”

Rereading The Power Broker and paying.a lot more attention to the journalism side of the story (in Part 6-7). New York has always been like this. Another decade, another Sulzberger. (And mayors fleeing prosecution to Mexico.. now they just stay and let the Supreme Court overturn their verdicts)

That’s small stuff compared to others admins, but that (and other small things) have been executed well, and Dems aren’t split on it. Strengthening NATO/Ukraine might not be the kind of change that reinforces party strength, but is another sign the party’s unified and perhaps of changing rhetoric

Excellent article! I think the ultimate test will be what happens with Supreme Court reform if Biden is reelected… There’s been no Congressional majority for big institutional changes, but I *would * maybe add to the list of “is this what Reconstructive politics feels like” changes to the NLRB!
