My position is that prominent Biden allies apparently believe that he's cognitively compromised, and that that belief—not the bad media coverage—is leading the push to have him step down. If top Dems all thought the Times was wrong, Biden's position on the ticket would be safe.

I don't doubt it, but I don't even think that's necessary. They could just question whether he has the wherewithal to make the case he has to, to overcome his deficit in the polls. That's his job now. I suspect if they thought he could pull that off, they'd be fine shielding him a la Feinstein.

Ideally, you'd have gotten, "I talked to Biden just last week. That's not the guy I saw up there. He was exhausted from travel and a cold" would have been an easy talking point. But they aren't making it because (by all accounts), he has been insular both before and after. 1/
