One of the little etymology things I like to note is the word people use for these creatures—growing up in rural Ohio, I knew them as "lightning bugs." It seems "fireflies" is slowly taking over. It's more elegant, but it is something to think about holding a flash of lightning in your cupped hands.

They were lightning bugs for us growing up in the 70s/80s near NYC. I now say firefly when speaking poetically, but still lightning bug when I'm referring to the thing in my back yard.

Lightning bugs here in rural Minnesota. I'm not sure when I started calling them fireflies but I certainly did switch!
