I looked up some data when I was dealing with a scary situation awhile back - I wanted to know if the chances were, like, 1 in 400 that this person would become violent, or what. I expected the odds to be low! Turns out the rate of stalkers who become physical is between 25 and 50%!

Stalking of celebrities is so profoundly normalized that the general public rarely bats an eye. But celebrities are still human beings and normalizing what happens to them is harmful for ALL victims.

Did you know that women and girls under 25 have the highest rates of stalking in Canada?
It's not enough to tell girls and women to leave abusive relationships. They also need safety planning because leaving is the most dangerous time.

Dr Julia Lippman's research found that in framing persistence and obsession as romantic, we've desensitized women to the realities of stalking. The answer isn't Death To RomComs! But rather standardized media literacy so we can spot red flags.

Victims of stalking often downplay their experiences & rarely come out & say "I'm being stalked."
As an ally, listen for things like "He's being creepy", "they just won't leave me alone", "I'm kinda freaked out."

We are recommending that the law should be changed to remove "fear for your safety" and replace it with "Impede your ability to go about your daily life" which is far more easily measured and less likely to lead to bias.

The "fear for your safety" part is subjective and in too many cases, judges have relied on sexist stereotypes to say a woman wasn't afraid.
In one (in)famous case, because the survivor is seen on camera yelling at her stalker to leave her alone, the justice argued that she clearly wasn't afraid.

In Canada, stalking is called Criminal Harassment. To meet the legal threshold, you have to prove it was unwanted, repeated and made you fear for your safety.
It's only been a crime since 1993!
It's a very flawed law that we are working to change :
