It ain't 1 to 1 but this whole thing is putting me in mind of the story of br'er rabbit and br'er fox and the briar patch story. Br'er rabbit tricks the fox into throwing him in the briar patch so he can escape by making the ol' fox think getting thrown in the patch is the last thing he wants.

Feels like a similar rope-a-dope happening here. Someone trying to conjure up an idea that wasn't there before and trying to make someone throw shit away when all they gotta do to win is eat the damn rabbit they've already got cornered.
