The main reason it took so long outside the obvious is that originally I was planning to just do the canon designs for the items but after doing my Link redesign I foolishly decided to redesign every single item. Not counting Link himself there are 87 items in there.

I clip layers to the shadow layer so I can paint shadows separately from the light.

I also use high pass to get extra sharpness, even after median. It’s all about building it up little by little to really polish and control the chaotic texture.

Oh so that’s achieved by copy merging my raw texture buildup stage and running a median filter on it. Then masking out areas I want to keep crisper. Median is such a crazy underrated ps filter.

Here you can see how I mapped out my shadows and scale flows. This is a vital step to get the texture to read as wrapping around the form believably if you are gonna paint it by hand. I also drew a wireframe around muscles to make sure its all very dimensional.

A bit more detail on the breakthrough. Basically I found a way to modify an exist brush I had to create exactly the texture look I've been chasing for a decade. I actually did use it on my mimic piece since that was completed after these. I am planning to do a tutorial on this!

I’m probably in the minority but I mostly prefer old paintings pre restorations. I like seeing the age come through in the aesthetics. A layer of time coats the work and that looks cool.
