He's not smart enough to make the discernments he needs to keep on the path he's chosen (affable, heterodox, data-focused moderate libertarian.) Will Wilkinson does the same schtick better, but Wilkinson is a nobody who went to state school, while Barro went to Harvard because his dad worked there.
