If Biden wins, it’ll be fun hounding them with this quote for a long time.

The media would immediately spin it as Harris being prepared to take over/run the admin from behind the scenes

I keep saying this, who the military backs in a hypothetical authoritarian takeover is far from certain. They tend to be much less predictable than that. Cops though… cops almost always back the authoritarian.

Yeah, I don’t think the NYT will let up on Harris either. That’s the issue. You get extra chaos and you don’t stop the NYT from putting their thumbs on the scale.

Which is probably why they’re speed running the end of democracy. If nobody else can replicate Trump’s campaigns, then they get one or two more shots at the White House with him before he dies. After that they gotta find another appealing candidate, and they’re struggling with that.

I do wonder if she and her peers realize they’re on the verge of being consumed by the same extremism they helped push along.

Moving to Canada as a backup plan has always struck me as a bad one. Any situation that’s bad enough to make leaving America necessary will probably leave Canada far worse off, and there’ll be so many Americans trying as to cause issues and resentment.

I’ve reached a point where I won’t have any sympathy if the fascist regime they’re rooting for hurts them.

An alarming number of them seem to think this is a game. That it might literally kill some of their colleagues doesn’t seem to click with them.

Counterpoint; the robots don’t actually work. There’s a reason why they’re always flashy demos and never at actual protests.

I don’t think the tit for tat would be worse, tbh. At a certain size the court would become less functional than congress due to just sheer coordination issues. I don’t think people should confuse a band aid for a permanent fix though.

The only real way I can see is a constitutional amendment that curtails the power of the court and individual justices. But that’s a political non starter, alas.

I’ll say that while militaries are kinda wild cards in these scenarios, cops usually are not.

@jbouie.bsky.social reposted it a while ago, but there was a really good Harvard law piece on the “Imperial Supreme Court”. Their consistent position is that the court should get more power, and everyone else gets less.

Expand the court, preferably by dropping a large object on it from a great distance.

For the ones that don’t actually want Trump to win, a second Biden admin is almost as bad to them. Of course they can’t say that, since they’d have to own up to the deeply petty and unbecoming reasons why they don’t like Biden.

He also waffles wildly between reasonable and total crank, at least in his written work. I feel like this situation has put him into some kinda quantum state.

Ignoring the specific people; no candidate is capable of building name recognition, a coalition, and a campaign in time. Like, replacing the candidate this close to the election is a disaster even on the practical merits.

This feels very similar to the dynamic that got Biden the nomination for 2020. Lots of excitement for not Trump, but diffuse and unfocused.

History is full of militaries breaking for one faction or another (or themselves alone!) all the time, often to the fatal surprise of one faction or another. Anyone who is certain how it would go is a fool.

It’s always baffling to see tradcath types aligning with the evangelical hard right. I’m not sure whose prayers win in this scenario, but I can tell you whose would lose.

Generally in these situations the military wins. Whose side the military is on is the real question they should ask.

Barely, at that. Fascists are really, really bad at actually managing economies and prospecting wars. They’re all for demonstrations of strength, but lack the imagination and flexibility to do it correctly.

“Hypocrisy is the price vice pays to virtue”. It’s better to live in a world where unethical people feel compelled to pretend to the contrary. Feels like we’re heading towards a low trust society.

The source is recent, and discussing his performance in his office in DC. And yes, it is intended to be literal since as best we can tell sundowning is quite literally triggered by fading light and long shadows. The source *you provided* says this.
