Every time I read about average differences in values between the right and left wings I hear that the right wing folks strongly value loyalty and yet!

The value obedience... They assume they are the ones others should be loyal to, but see no need for loyalty to flow the other direction.

The unspoken part, of course, is that they only value loyalty when it's coming in to themselves, i.e. "I care only that you are loyal to me, I don't have to be loyal to you in return" It's part of the hierarchical thinking mindset very common to right wing thought and damn hard to shift

Thing is, people saying this confuse loyalty with utility, possibly even intentionally. Thereโs an overlap, sure, but I think itโs more often the latter

"I deal w/ the Loyal people all the time. They're the best, no one better than the Loyal people. They're clean, reliable, & get the job done every time. I see them everywhere I go, in our great restaurants, office buildings, hotels. Truly our partners in the fight against filth in this Country!"๐
