Well you’re doing better than I did, I’ve seen several episodes and I still can’t figure out if it’s satire or not… which, now that I think about it… is very British.

Yes. And yes. But you have faith in yourself and in your family. Sometimes you gotta ride the late night hope/faith train without the rest of humanity on it. But there’ll always be some kid in the back with headphones and a hoodie. Or some middle aged stock-clerk. You’re not alone.

It would be a good turn but honestly, she’s years too late. We gave a shit about everything she represents in 2016 but now all we care about is outgunning Trump at any cost and she’s just not that popular.

Only slightly related: it’s always bothered me that The Neck is not a strong single piece of land but a wet indefensible mess. It’s always made me feel uneasy.

No it’s true. English is a more accepted version of a language defaulting to an informal version of itself. Like Swiss-French or swiss-German, it started as a lingua franca.

Not anymore but people still make “labor of love” programming. I will say that a lot of pidgin contains stereotypes that we consider culturally appropriate and help us to differentiate ourselves that westerners have repeatedly taken issue with. You have been warned.

It’s a lot like mandarin where you have to actually pay attention to the person speaking for complete context. Which results in thicker speakers having greater weight paid to their dialogue in conversation. Hopefully it will always have a place due to this. It’s hard not to listen to when you hearit

It’s very interesting with things like business and education. I’m always faced with the choice to present myself in clean English or the thickness with which to lay on the pidgin. It depends who I’m talking to and how I want to convey my self.

I had a friend who moved here for his graduate program in southern pacific languages. Great guy, so knowledgeable about pidgin, perfect pronunciation, everything… but you can still tell he’s not from here when he speaks pidgin. It’s weird to speak with such assumptions when you’re used to English.

I am but if this was a language iceberg I’m sitting at 20 feet below the surface (I am fluent enough that you can tell I’m from here). There’s people in the deep that I can’t even understand. When my dad sees someone from high school they may as well be talking a different language altogether.

It could be. An implicit irony has grown from whatever the initial reason was for the lexicon bottleneck. I can tell exactly how someone feels by the way they use or don’t use a certain word or phrase. A lot of it is based on intonation from the speaker and learned empathy from the listener.

100%. And here’s a well written sample by comparison. The thing about pidgin is how contextual it is. A thousand words like “nene” and “dakine” are virtual multi-use having both specific and general meanings, unrelated to each other.

No it’s its own thing. It’s only about 30% English when used correctly. There’s a lot of Hawaiian, Chinese, Tagalog, Portuguese, Japanese words, idiomatic phrasing, and intonation. It’s very hard to get a hold of without experience.

Though extremely meme-able, there’s a reason that Queen song doesn’t show upon too many karaoke lists despite everyone knowing it: why even try? If you’re drunk enough to hit those notes you’re too drunk to remember the lyrics. And you better have six drunk friends for the Galileo Figaro part.

For real. It’s never been some spotless appraisal of two squeaky candidates so why are we treating it like that now? It’s been a “lesser of two evils” contest the entire time. Yeah, the evils are pretty evil but holy shit, autocracy and open civil war sounds pretty bad and trump has drafted no less.

That and they have a decent crust. I don’t know why society has migrated from hand-tossed to thin crust but it’s offense enough to drive me into the open arms of the sub-4-star establishments. I came here to be full and feel like shit afterwards, I’m not going to buy 2 to receive that feeling.
