The congress party is dominated by the Nehru-Gandhi family. Up until the reign of Indira gandhi(who herself wasn't a good person), they held steadfast to secularism. Her son who succeeded her opened up a pandora's box by pandering to conservative hindus and muslims /1

This was coupled with the death and retirement of influential leaders who represented lower caste interests. This led to a break in the congress's hold over these groups. This led to a burst of parties that pandered to conservative Hindus(BJP), lower castes(SP, BSP etc) /2
