I recorded a lifer today, Yellow-headed Blackbird, without realizing it. Apparently I’ve never seen one! The males’ call is a bizarre screeching buzz like a heavy door swinging on a very rusty metal hinge. I found four males around a fluddle in northern Illinois. 🪶

Black Tern, S. Bruce Peninsula, Ontario, May 2024, a species of special concern that builds floating nests in loose colonies in shallow marshes, especially in cattails. Once common in Ontario, threats include human disturbance – especially boat traffic, which can swamp the terns’ floating nests. 🪶
