When my mom was in her 50's her boyfriend had a breakdown and held a gun to her threatening to kill her if she left him. She told him to shoot her and he backed down and she left him anyway after that. Why is that so typical in the United States?

Every few days I hear gunshots from my bedroom. Last summer it was almost every night. I'm tired of crying. I'm tired of living in fear all the time. I'm tired of fearing for everyone I love.
