my grandma like many people grandma's was a big time christian. maybe of the kinder type, relatively speaking, not as fundamentalist as others. she had a real interest in wacky mormonism and was amazed that it all happened a few decades away from the year of her birth. practically modern.

there are so many affidavits supporting that 'manuscript found' exists (or existed) with the mormon names that the people trying to support or disprove the conspiracy move on to how & when it could've been shared with sydney rigdon. me i would need a good explanation of why it isn't around anymore.

it doesn't help that spaulding had two books with similar names, 'manuscript found' is the one with mormon names, and 'manuscript story' bears little to no resemblance to mormonism, and it still exists.

they call it anti-mormonism which while true does less to describe it than does christian zealotry -- the religious desire to strike down a false religion, and to *fix* what they're saying about jesus. a great distraction from the catholic v protestant fight.

there are many affidavits signed contemporarily that support the spaulding theory and it's what christians of the day generally thought to be true about mormonism, except that particular book could never be produced despite spaulding's wish to have it printed.

joseph smith came into possession of golden plates written in a language only he can read with the aid of a magical device, and it had these same names in it. a version of events that is a lot less credible than the spaulding theory, but less incredible than he made it all up himself.
