For me it's a very real fear that what is going to happen is that streets will be re-architected to make them safe for EVs by further restricting access for anyone not in a car. Just permanently locking in car dependency.

I don't see any reason to think that will happen?? If anything they are going to make pedestrians and bikes more willing to ignore traffic laws because they know a driverless car will stop for them (people are already much more willing to cut off and otherwise obstruct driverless cars in SF, I hear)

The case for AVs is the opposite: that re-developing the built environment is so hard in the current political environment that AVs are the only way to use them more efficiently without having to attempt the herculean task of actually funding redevelopment and new infrastructure for trains etc.
