I think they will struggle at this abortion may be, weirdly enough, a super salient issue but not necessarily for the same reasons it was in 2022

yeah it’s tough to tell I do think he needs to really put on a spectacular performance now to totally allay considerations Trump will be Trump ofc both during and after the election (barring acts of God) I worry that Biden could have a repeat of the debate performance

I'm not entirely opposed to nominating candidates via convention on principle fwiw but it would be a major mess and could further worsen the divides within the party

yes, definitely there's no good options but I think the other thing is that if he doesn't step down and has more performances like the debate it'll get played as the party going with a candidate who's obviously still unfit especially with the leaks going around now

I do feel his age is a concern though, and I think it could damage him isn't he polling ten points behind Trump rn? and it seems like the debate will be a pretty salient consideration for some time

new primary in this case would be an open convention which would go pretty poorly given CBC seems very strongly behind Biden one wonders if switching to another candidate wouldn't alienate some pretty important voter blocs too

Oh I agree I think we have to wait for it to settle And obviously Vatican II has become a proxy for debates over modernity that have really been ongoing since the late 19th century

I think said priest had at least done a fair bit of academic stuff before though I’m not sure I think he really objected to O’Malley’s personal interpretation of the Council’s effect (which happens in that last chapter where he talks about how liberating it was)

maybe I need to follow this generally what I do is I go to Divinum Officium, check out the Tridentine (1570) Office, and then just pull up a PDF of an older antiphonary and use that to figure out what the relevant psalm tones are makes for wonderful singing

in the midst of this there was definitely chaos and this probably explains the perceived havoc of the post-VII era Ratzinger probably says it well enough As does Balthasar in that wonderful essay

Maybe that’s an effect of Trent—it had solidified a sense of total timelessness among the Church VII’s attempts to engage w/ modernity (which had previously been looked on w/ hostility) made everything seem fragile and uncertain

but eg i don’t think there’s anything really comparable b/w what Trent* does (shuffling some of the psalms at Prime and paring down a few feasts) and what VII** does (adding new Canons, abolishing entire seasons etc) *really S Pius V and his reformers **really S Paul VI and his reformers

oh I see yeah I thought we were purely talking about the liturgical reforms of Trent Certainly Trent was pretty radical in other ways (that is always how reforms work)

it’s somewhat different wrt the missals that precede and follow Vatican II for better or worse—as far as I know the trads *are* right that the reforms of Vatican II are fairly unprecedented in their scope

My God I want to sing the Office but, as I’m not willing to spend hundreds on the latest antiphonary, it’s only practical to sing the pre-VII Offices

I feel like the liturgical reforms in particular (which, as the most visible of the reforms, have become a stand-in for the whole project) are a bit complicated on that score They’re often backward looking but I think in many ways they are also “updates”, as it were

Tho my other take on the lessons is that a lot of the problems with theatrical readings are solved with chant. Chant the lessons! Chant is good!

Agreed, as someone who also endures the same thing Scripture itself is a symbol, and symbols are symbolic because they speak to themselves! Let the Word speak! Commentary belongs in the homily

With China it’s really interesting because Chinese nationalism can often be multiethnic (this is baked into the concept of the Zhonghua race) this goes back to Sun Yat-sen
