Just as a practical matter, as long as he's capable, I think it's more important to keep his seniority-earned power in the senate (chair of healthcare committee, etc.) than to pass the baton to a younger & inexperienced senator w/ no real influence. He does make a difference there.

No way. The same conversation was happening a decade ago. You've no way to know if the political landscape will become more hospitable later, and you're losing valuable time where he and other politicians could be transitioning healthily instead of setting up surprise vacancies in hostile settings.
