It's hard to believe someone that stupid was able to dress herself and find her way to the interview.

Thanks for the deets. There's also this tell: every time he tells a story beginning with some unnamed person addressing him as "Sir," that's a lie.

The thing that still annoys me about "impacted" is that there are so many better -- more specific -- words; e.g., boosted, bolstered, awakened, roused. Or, if the impact was bad: stalled, hurt, crippled, cramped. And so on.

I used to rant about that every time I heard it.* But I conceded defeat years ago. * Unless it concerned a wisdom tooth.

Thanks! I was thinking of it in terms of competing primary candidates, but that obvs didn't make sense. Should have stayed with that thought a bit longer.

Serious question: Why do you even bother to turn on cable news anymore? Do you have any realistic expectations that it will ever be different? I turned on CNN for 10 minutes the day Saddam got captured, b/c I was in a hotel w/o Internet. Apart from that, I haven't watched cable news in 30 years.

An extra reason to feel good about this historian: Nate Silver simply does not care for his model. ;)

I have much love for @aoc.bsky.social but I think trying to impeach any of SCOTUS at this point is an empty gesture, would quickly be seen as one, and would probably net out as counterproductive.

You wanna do it right? Win the election in November, THEN do the impeaching.

Good to hear! Glad you have your priorities in order. I can understand not being a Biden fan, although I am certainly a fan of much of what he has accomplished in his first term. I just cannot understand those on the left who don't like Biden who think Trump will be anything but far worse.

On Trump's proposal to cut taxes (for the rich) and raise tariffs, here is a chart from @pkrugman.bsky.social on what to expect.

In words: "The net effect would be negative for 80 percent of the population, especially for the bottom 60 percent, while extremely positive for the top 1 percent."

I can see that. But I still think it's a better strategy to combat those feelings of hopelessness by hammering on the get out and vote message. I have a feeling that "symbolic attempts to fight back" could be additionally discouraging, when they produce no results.

So, among other things, supposed Biden is behind after most of the votes are counted, come this November. What is(n't) he allowed to do, thanks to the SCOTUS?

(2/2) that impeachment directed at SCOTUS won't work, at this point, and especially not, given the delays of the upcoming Congressional recesses: two wks off in July, and every day except one in August: it has no hope of success.

Simplistic, but I agree, to some degree.

Why only some? Because if we don't vote to keep Trump out of office, fascism is guaranteed.

Really, though, my disagreement with @owillis.bsky.social and @aoc.bsky.social is not about how (in)effective voting might be. It's narrower: (1/2)

Sorry, no. He has a different opinion on the matter from mine, that's all. You may agree more with his view than mine, and that's fine, but this is not an objective matter. There is no right or wrong about it.

I like @aoc.bsky.social a whole lot, but I don't think trying to impeach anyone from SCOTUS at this point is going to do anything.

There are no quick fixes for the mess we're in. Voting is all we have left.

Yeah, I'm with @penny4justice.bsky.social. Stern words from the Dems just will not get it done at this point.

IDK what to recommend, apart from my fantasy that Biden goes medieval with some Official™ acts, which ain't gonna happen.

I think there is nothing to do at the point except vote like hell.

My last remaining fantasy*, thanks to the SCOTUS 6, is that Biden decides to go medieval on Trump's ass with some Official™ acts of his own.

* Not counting the more reality-based one: that we all get out there on Election Day and trample the #ArtOfTheStall underfoot with our votes.

(2/2) as quickly as possible, will likely result in another appeal to SCOTUS.

#TheArtOfTheStall has worked to perfection.

My only remaining fantasy: Biden decides to go medieval on Trump's ass with some "official" acts of his own.

I'd say even worse, if not much worse, because they declared pretty strongly that Trump has absolute immunity for "official" acts, and maybe not for "unofficial." The punt back to the lower court is to decided with is official/unofficial. Which, even if they find as harshly as possible and (1/2)

(2/3) Yes. Does this ignore how corrupting large buckets of money can be? Yes. I admit these warts, & others you could name. My only wish is this: every single donation has to be public.* And easily accessible, in an online database. This to me seems like the best balance reasonably achievable.

Part of me resonates with your wish. But even assuming there was any way we could implement such a system at this point, I have to say that a bigger part of me believes that candidates should be free to spend whatever they can raise. Is this a "money=free speech" glibertarian point of view? (1/3)

Mostly advertising. I don't donate to campaigns anymore. It just feels ridiculous to think that my paltry contribution could make the slightest difference. I know that this is one of *those* problems; e.g., like the arguments about whether one's vote matters. For whatever reason, I always vote.
