Why is this couches as an attack on faculty? They used faculty names, clearly that didn’t fool anyone. Faculty are supposed to take this in stride, and administration is supposed to give them security that they need not fear such antics. Posting racist and homophobic slurs anonymously is the wrong.

Every murder conviction from now on is really just punishment for a lack of commitment. After all, there’s X people above you in the line of succession, so if you just had the stick-to-it-iveness to do X+1 murders, you’d be free-and President! Truly the land of opportunity.

I admit I’ve only seen bits of the Deadpool story (he’s dying of cancer, but the regeneration keeps it in check, but it’s still ravaging him, right?), but yes, I think so

The “everyone pretends Covid didn’t happen“ was more compelling to me before my son started binging 9-1-1, which absolutely digs into it. And then I remember The Bubble and Glass Onion, and hmm, maybe if I haven’t consumed ALL THE MEDIA, I could just - not presume to tell it what to do?

Wolverines blood is not too different from Henrietta Lacks’s, and could be similarly useful, but it has the problem that you can’t see a treatment effect - the blood fixes everything on its own

I think sort of this - fatally. (There was an X-Men annual where a drop of his blood regenerates into him when it hits some alien supercrystal to power it up.) The blood keeps trying to grow into more Logan inside the host. What heals him, inside another body, is a supercancer.

(A) They are vigilantes. (B) This is strongly akin to the RPG “prisoner dilemma” that narratively it’d just be so -convenient- if adversaries could be harmlessly incapacitated. Spidey’s habit of webbing muggers up with a note for the police is the best version, imo.

(IMO) Grants are a barely non-pathological mix of micromanagement and slushiness, with the rules strongly biased toward institutions (vs researchers), as well as being real barriers to entry to exactly who you’d expect. Not allowing buyouts is suspiciously like not allowing one to do research.

I think almost everyone I know with the job is happy to have chosen the job. It’s got benefits and drudgeries, and they took it with the benefits outweighing the drudgeries for them. When unis, personal lives, and departments change, the balance might change, but one takes it bc it worked for them.

I’m at a big state (yes, R1) uni, and the complaint I hear more is the other side: “why should state employee raises include uni faculty, you don’t even work 3 months out of the year!” (Of course, those potential raises apply to the non-TT faculty also).

True, but cultural references aren’t things students carry in their heads anymore - you can say “cromulent - it’s from a scene in the Simpsons” and in thirty seconds a class will have uploaded it and understand it. You cannot connect with them and sound hip, but it’s not “Shaka, when the walls fell”

I would prefer a discussion of “who has pardoned themselves, do we think they were baddies, is there evidence Trump would pardon himself of verdicts in other cases if he could, if so do other Republicans say self-pardoning is good?”

I was going to say something similar. The big movie hit probably pays well (good for them!) but makes following through harder - with some exceptions (Phil Collins), everything you make is going to compete with that hit for airtime, and one song doesn’t make the -band- a cultural touchstone

Hm. “usefulness will determine how big conferences evolve in the face of disruption” is an optimistic position that I cannot but question. Separately, I readily agree that tech doesn’t facilitate social/networking functions, but my misplaced optimism is that that’s fixable.

My alternate universe Champions would’ve leant in to the pitch - “champions of the common man” - and be a somewhat shifting roster of superhero hobos and heroes needing a place for a bit. Not too far from the Oracle Inc or Misty Knight Heroes for Hire, but consciously away from New York. could gel-

Yes, but…Defenders can be made to make sense if you squint, although New Defenders were an awful lot like Kurt’s description of Champions - X-Men looking for a book to hang out in. They don’t all start with great ideas that pan out - they morph and make sense in retrospect as much as anything else.

This is extremely narrow, but: “The Snake” is a song, written by Oscar Brown Jr.; it was a hit in 1968 when sung by Al Wilson. It is not a poem by Al Wilson, which is what Trump calls it when he reads it out in speeches against immigration (it is not about immigration.)

What “basic principles of good argument” is depends a lot on who the “people at the university” are talking to. A lot of administrators treat faculty opinions as a nuisance and are speaking to a different constituency, for whom (they believe) “good argument” is counterproductive to their aim.

technically both: “inert silicon bushing (acts as resilient body seal)” and “all three claws surrounded by silicon sheath to maintain sepsis (not shown)” Given that silicon isn’t adamantium, and that he’s sort of shredded regularly, I feel like the silicon probably needs to be repeatedly replaced.

This sounds like a subtweet/vaguebook/fogskeet, so I probably shouldn’t comment, but in general I think this is the inevitable emotional response to an adversarial process without a resolution mechanism. Capitulation doesn’t happen - a ref needs to end the match and declare a winner.

I think there’s a lot of comic books, particularly X-Men books, that are accurately summarized as “Talking about how flying and punching doesn’t solve all problems, punctuated by generous amounts of trying to solve problems by flying and punching.”

This is well said. There’s a deep challenge in policing one’s bandwagon - the pro-Palestinian movement needs to treat antisemitism as a systemic threat, and also norms of what is (and is not) antisemitic need to be defended both from sincere extremists and opportunists.

I don’t know who to blame, the coverage of what the papers are supposed to be or the actual prompts for the papers, but it seems it exactly betrays the idea of restorative justice (and all writing, really) to dictate that the conclusion should be “how I was wrong.”
