a favorite Zen story... A pair of monks looking at a flag that was flapping in the wind were having a little debate over whether it was the flag that was flapping or it was the wind that was flapping. They asked future Zen teacher, Huineng, for his view. Huineng replied, "Your mind is flapping." 💨

2:2 And the understanding was that God shapes the earth, and that poets shape words. There are many forms of spiritual and religious expression. I find it beneficial to see much of it as poetry.

1:2 I recently had occasion to note my playfully serious view that: *If we take religious language literally, we're not taking it seriously enough.* I just learned that the first Old English poets didn't use the Latin-derived word "create," but instead the word which we now have as "shape."

Reminds me of an old SNL spot ... where Kevin Nealon plays a credit card phone operator who notices a number of wedding-related purchases on a customer's account ... so calls the customer to make sure the person that they're marrying is right for them.

A bit different, but Old School Buddhist jhāna meditation inculcates synesthesias — e.g., focusing on the breath in a set location (for days) until you can *see it* (as like a pearl or light or jewel). I've done them. Remarkable.
I mention the experience here: thesideview.co/journal/deco...

2_2 Otherwise, it's as though, when we're holding to an opinion, the opinion is holding us. This is a bit of an extended association, but another way of saying the above is: "Awakening is through the body."

In tonight's #meditation there was a sense for how the instructions "do not think good or bad," "do not judge right and wrong," and "do not get caught up in like or dislike"* — are in the service of, as it were, allowing an embrace from the way things are.

really nice I was once walking thru Harvard Yard on a nice day and decided to some meditation. I sat under a tree, and settled in, touching, as it were, some part of me that's always awake. Then I laughed — I WAS DREAMING that I was in Harvard Yard meditating. I was actually in bed at home asleep.

It's not an answer, but such a question remind me — I've sometimes had the no-doubt-about-it experience of meditating during dreamless sleep. Some kind of knowing, some kind of "awareness," is able to do that, but it's not my waking awareness. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Many #meditation traditions include instructions that we inculcate calm, and inner quiet, and peacefulness, and equanimity.
These days it's very much my sense that allowing and fostering such states is mainly in service to one thing — that we just not make stuff up,

Psychologist/ long time meditator here. I have an essay on "mindfulness" here, not all of it as snarky as this line 🙂... "There’s been a marked increase in studies of mindfulness and meditation in recent years. I’m worried that many of today’s researchers may think they know what they’re doing."

Similarly, the anonymous 14th c. author of *The Cloud of Unknowing* (probably a Carthusian) spoke of realizing, in an experience more immediate & simple than thoughts, that the Divine is our being: "Come to rest in a naked blind feeling of your own being, and let go of the conceit that it is yours."

(It's from Ramelli, Ilaria. 2023. "Apophaticism, Mysticism, and Epoptics in Ancient and Patristic Philosophy: Some Important Examples" ... she does great academic work in this area ... and that article appears in a journal issue that I think is open access online: czasopisma.kul.pl/index.php/vv...)

reading right now: This is why Dionysius [the Areopagite] ascribes eros to God “the cause of all beings, by excess of goodness, loves all beings, creates all beings, perfects all beings,... and [causes the return of] all beings.... The “ecstatic” excess of God’s love [is] the cause of all beings...

I once got to visit Rumi's tomb in Konya. I sat to do some meditation nearby. When I opened my eyes a small circle of young Muslim fellows was seated around me. They asked, in a friendly, appreciative way, what I was doing—though it was clear they had a good idea. We had a pleasant conversation.❤️🙏

The field has a ways to go ... but at least some academics are aware of that, as suggested by this title: Dillon, John, “Prayer and Contemplation in the Neoplatonic and Sufi Traditions,” *Praying and Contemplating in Late Antiquity. Religious and Philosophical Interactions* (ed. E. Pachou, 2018)
