Bad equipment is one thing, but even a trained professional can compensate for bad equipment (at least to a point). The fact that Stormtroopers are *THAT BAD* demonstrates not just the influence of bad equipment... They're simply awful at what they're supposed to do.

On purpose in the 1st one! Leia has to escape so they can track her to the rebel base. They had to make it look like they were escaping for the ruse to work. Leia understands the ease of their escape means they're being tracked. Han doesn't believe it b/c he's a goof.
