The item comes to us thanks to the generosity of the family of the Leipzig-born scientist and collector Sir Ralph Kohn, through the Acceptance in lieu scheme. Out of love for his adopted home, he wanted it to go to a UK institution.

Bach’s relentless schedule of composing a new cantata every week means that the manuscript shows characteristic signs of being written in great haste. The corrosive iron-gall ink has eaten away at the paper in a few places, particularly where notes have been corrected or amended.
