I thought about putting WD 95 on mine because that was The First, but went with WFB 3rd Ed instead as, well, that's what really hooked me once I saw the magazine. It was quite the introduction. I'd never seen anything like it.

Two boxes of Perry plastic infantry will give you about 80 figs, which is more than enough for one side with six units of twelve figs. You can play with that number and probably use one plastic box per side, but add some metal skirmishers and artillery. Rules are $20, d6 based. Sorted. Off you go.

A very accessible starting point is Osprey's "Rebels and Patriots", which focuses on 28mm figs on a 4' x 4' table. 60 to 70 figs per side in around six units will give you a decent game. Everything you need is in the book. Rules are simple, but also subtle and fun. There's also "Sharp Practice".

I've "done" most of the major battlefields, so now I'm into smaller actions. There were tons of foraging expeditions, raids, probes and all sorts of petit guerre actions around here, some of which are fascinating and involved people like JEB Stuart, JS Mosby and Custer.

Within three and a half hours drive - everything from Manassas/Bull Run, Gettysburg, Antietam, the Shenandoah Valley Campaign, Fredericksburg, the Wilderness, Chancellorsville, the Virginia Peninsula campaign etc Pretty much 90% of the Eastern Theater.

The blue-grey Peter Tait "Irish jackets" are particularly on point for later Western Theatre Confederates, particularly Longstreet's corps which was refitted and transferred there. They'll slot in nicely with Sherman's campaigns.
