Rando bookbinder chiming in- for edge painting, all you need is a little airbrush and airbrush paint. Put some wax paper in between the covers and endsheets, tape up over the edges, mask off any other bits with tape, clamp the heck out of the book, then spray a few light coats!

I'm up at my mentors this week and we managed to cast one single piece of type, which immediately jammed the machine. If we manage to get everything in order, this will be 12 point Royal Typewriter, so you can pretend whatever you're printing was made on a typewriter instead of a press.
