It is possible I will be angry about what Amazon did to Comixology for the rest of my life. I read and discover so, so much less without that incredible website to browse. The kindle store version isn’t even “we have comixology at home,” it’s “you don’t get to have comixology, eat a dick”
Big Tech company acquisitions generally work like this: purchase a great small company, pay the founders obscene amounts of money to stay for a year, shut the purchased company down. They don't care about the original base of users. It's just a way to shut down a competitor. Financial nukeware.
ComiXology was my favorite app/site and I very frequently exceeded my monthly "reasonable comic book spending" budget on there.
And Amazon just killed it.
Yup, I went from buying 5 or 6 books regularly plus a bunch of whatever was on sale each month to a 1 or 2 books maybe every three or four months. I honestly get more books from Humble Bundles now than anywhere else.
My husband had a bunch of books on Comixology that people actually read/bought (even stuff like sports comics that North American publishers don't usually touch because they think there's no market). That's basically dried up as an audience-building/income source now
I loved Comixology.
At least they reintroduced the guided view, but I never again enjoyed online comic shopping and browsing like I did.
Instead, I have spread my reading to more platforms: Humble, Kobo, Izneo, Swoosh.
It cut back so much on my comics buying. It had to be really amazing for me to bother anymore. Whereas before I was grabbing entire runs or clicking on stuff just cuz the cover looked interesting.
Stopped me reading dead. I guess I should delve into whats left over there someday but it’s unpleasant… and it’s made my kindle prose book reading experience annoying too.
It drives me entirely outside my mind that they OWN THE TECHNOLOGY and instead of using it to improve the kindle store experience they’re still like “naaaaaaah, use our bad shitty version.”
The Kindle app is atrocious at nearly every level. I’m pretty sure you still can’t even buy books on it on the iPhone version. I tried to test this and got frustrated with the interface within 30 seconds and closed it and will likely uninstall it.
