Also, I'm not sure the historic Dutch Republic (1579-1795) would have much ground to stand on critiquing the United States for slavery, given that it also had slavery in its colonies (and indeed, in the Netherlands proper until 1776) and was a major participant in the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

Who said they were deficient? The point is simply that they're not a product of liberalism, ideologically, which is true - they're too old. Also, not Switzerland, the Old Swiss Confederacy. That is a meaningful distinction in terms of time and structure.
