On July 4th, 1776, the bearer of the document was ambushed by British regulars and brought in for quarter. At great risk to himself he passed the document to another revolutionary before his capture.

The British, aware of the courier's mission, demanded he hand the document over to them. He was stripped, beaten and tortured. But it was too late! The document was in the rightful hands and was signed! The commander of the British brig, frustrated, ordered the courier executed.
