Again; the furries thought otherkin/lifestyles were overly serious and made them look bad (90s furry had a HUGE component of wanting legitimacy), and therians saw furries as basically weekend warriors equivalent to a very white guy wearing a warbonnet etc. Only time brought “we’re all weirdos here.”

I think this definitely contributed to it. Text-only chats leading to gaps in comprehension/tone, combined with groups that were just starting to get their own footing, likely lead to additional challenges/sensitivity that social media has since helped reduce. (Hey, it did something good for once!)
