Frederick Douglass' speech "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July" is required reading for the 4th of July. So everybody read this. This speech is read aloud annually by a historical reenact-or at Douglass' home that's preserved as a site across town from me in Anacostia, DC. That happens today.

Like I think there was a time when, some ideas, you would only hear them from one guy. And that guy sucked. Elite folks just agreed, hey, let's build a society around listening to odious people because dontcha know, we've all had that experience where a good idea came from a shitty person. 2/
