The best version of this argument I’ve seen is based on looking at the profit margins of large grocers. The big players in Canada’s grocery sector have little competition and growing profitability. Anecdotally, from a return visit to the SF Bay Area this month, the US situation feels less dire.

again, the increase in retail prices does not map, percentage-wise, onto the increases in the cost of labor, utilities, or rents
