Your point that people spend more on food services is a typical indicator that people are doing ok is a valid one though. But it doesn't mean fast food or food hasn't become more expensive.

A better question is how much have prices risen versus wages? For many people wages are doing better than prices. So the "numbers" may be up but they are purely nominal.
