Ending that bullshit would (1) be cheaper, (2) have more popular support, and (3) be more effective at curbing greenhouse gas emissions than the current elite campaign to replace internal combustion engine vehicles with battery electric vehicles.

It’s amazing how much energy is used on computation and data storage for “artificial intelligence” projects, plus privacy violating commercial data collection.

as far as i can tell they oppose Biden actions just when they are simply partisan hobby horses (e.g., student loan forgiveness), and not potential stepping stones toward authoritarianism

cops just say that shit reflexively. the actual #1 is distracted driving — cell phone use. how about just punish people for accidents/collisions. that’s all that matters

sure. but by the same token cars traveling above PSL is also not a real problem. so what

uh, yeah, that’s my point, it’s arbitrary. my comment was directed against the “divine infallibility” school of thought on speed limits.

I live in NJ where state law sets max speed limits for defined categories, but municipal and county politicians control the actual posted speed limit on almost all roads in their jurisdiction (within “statutory limits”). The result is often PSLs well below what engineers say is appropriate.

yes, publicly elected officials are surely qualified and set speed limits that are based their road engineering expertise and totally are not arbitrary at all 🙄

penalizing people according to arbitrary one-size-fits-all rules is absurd, given the enormous range of driver skill levels and vehicle performance characteristics.

yes, posted speed limits are arbitrary. roads should have speed guidance based exclusively on the engineers’ determination of what the roads are designed for. penalties should only kick in when someone actually causes a collision.

one person’s gut feeling is another’s irrational belief. how is rapid acceleration dangerous? some vehicles are more torquey than others, some drivers more leisurely than others. any definition of an “acceleration event” is inherently arbitrary.

this system doesn’t penalize dangerous driving. it penalizes highly context dependent things like “hard braking” and “acceleration events.” meanwhile, it disregards distracted driving (arguably the most widespread dangerous driving issue) because that’s not so easily measured/quantified.

misrepresentation, yes. but aside from that, the more fundamental problem is that “smarter” vehicles make dumber drivers. advanced driver-assistance systems (whatever they’re called) will always do more harm than good.

proponents of autonomous vehicles mostly talk as if the defining standard of good driving is merely navigating from one place to another without a collision. and i can’t imagine how anyone could be a good driver if that’s their whole notion of good driving.
