When I had a home with a big yard we stopped using any kind of fertilizer or poison for bugs or weeds. Within a year our home became a nature preserve for the neighborhood critters and such. Butterflies, birds, lizards, you name it.

Mine isn’t a preserve but I removed straggly old stuff and threw down organic grass seed. It came up fast, I left it long-ish and then came the rabbits to munch on it, and birds to grab worms, and lots of butterflies, etc. it’s nice and soft and the dogs can roll around without worry :-)
