We have little in common, sadly. We have no hobbies to share, few cultural touchstones. And due to the current circumstances, I'm trying to talk to him as much as possible, and I feel terrible for every second of silence. But the other day, out of the blue, he asked me: did I have trans friends?

I said yes, and he said he was glad, because he'd been doing the reading and he knew that things were tough for people like me. And we talked about it. I used to be so afraid to come out to my Dad. Comments he'd made, you know the kind of thing. And he still gets a lot wrong.
