So you get the effects of making it much easier to knock on the door of the first jhana, but with the potential downside of it being a much less grounded and therefore weaker experience

And I think I see why it works as a shallow trick in a sense: it’s a little dissociative compared to focusing on bodily sensations. The attention is not necessarily grounded, it can be floating in the void of memory, where it’s both safer/stabler *and* less embodied

Why focus on pleasantness in the body as the key to unlock the door to the first jhana, which is flimsy and fleeting and prone to a million external forces, when you can readily summon a pleasant connection or thought in your head, and focus on the pleasantness of *that*?
