This is why when my cat demanded I buy him a trained capuchin monkey I absolutely refused and took away his credit card. If cats get access to some other primate that they can more easily dominate we are doomed.

Well I guess if humanity was wiped out then it would be good for biodiversity but I don't think it is a policy position that will get a lot of support from humans โ€” who apparently are a major part of the voting public (I suspect dogs might be mainly pro-human also. Cats on the other hand...)

That's what I was going to say! Poor old Australia doesn't even have those! Lake Eyrie is the biggest and much of it doesn't usually even have water in it.

A bit squeakier than I imagined - not trying to voice shame Starmer it was just not what I expected (not that I could say what I expected).

Because I tend to read about UK politics rather than watch UK current affairs programs, I hadn't realised what Keir Starmer's voice sounded like.

Australians can sound smug about elections when we also have stupid right-wing government & far-right power grabs. Electoral reform can't erase the entrenched power of the wealthy (eg. Gena Rinehart & Rupert F-king Murdoch). Still, elections are genuinely better here. Voting reform is worth it.

I grew up thinking of them as the enemy so to speak (very Labour Party household & the SDP were traitors etc...) so Clegg confirmed a lot of my entrenched biases from decades earlier. In reality, they were always right about electoral reform. Not a panacea but definitely makes things less shit.

In their defence, they did attempt during their limited time in semi-power to push through electoral reform. That would have changed the game somewhat in the UK.

The Libdem coalition with the Tories under Cameron is a key part of how the UK got into this mess. There are lots of politically principled Libdems but the party itself tactically will run to the left or to the right of Labour depending on which way the wind is blowing.

I think when polls close in the UK it will be about 7 am here in Sydney. Good time to see the results but a bad time for a drink :(

OK - mixed feelings about voting when I don't live there anymore (and also, I only lived in safe Labour seats) but I know of righ-wing expats without such qualms and it would have been nice if only symbolically to vote this time around.

I have a UK passport but the last time I checked (which was probably over a decade ago) I needed to have stayed registered at a specific local registration office (wherever I was last registered). Having not done so, I couldn't get back on. But rules may have changed.

As much as I dislike Starmer & have long since lost any right to vote in the UK, an electoral wipe-out for the Tories will make me so happy.

As I said in my editorial in the new issue of Journey Planet that I helped edit.

"When things have broken so badly that multiple winners have stepped back and renounced this honor, you have a serious problem that needs to be addressed."
