My folks both turn 73 this year -- my dad basically got shoved into retirement and my mom's always said, "well, what ELSE would I do?" I think about that when politicians refuse to step aside at advanced age. Might not be power, could just be sense of identity. Sucks we've all got to suffer for it.

Can't speak for your parents but for the life of me, I simply don't believe that our elder statesmen can't come up with something better to do than die in office. They are almost universally rich, have pensions, have connections to every element of public life, show some imagination.
