That sounds great. Go to Chicago and have a nice dinner, check out of the hotel in the morning then spend the day reading on the train. I now want to do this

The press paraphrase Trump because if they actually quoted him it would be nonsense. Which is why they NEED to directly quote him

NYT has been doing this for a while. They faithfully quote full sentences including every “umm uhh” stutter or repetition from Biden then paraphrase Trump like “Trump states that the economy is “strong” and his next term will be “tremendous””. I haven’t seen a full quote from Trump in a long time

I almost smacked a guy at work who was bemoaning that the Harry Potter series was done and I quote “there’s nothing left to read.” I mean, it’s great you had a bonding experience with your kids but maybe pick up a book written for grownups occasionally

Fair point, but anyone who believes Trump will reward them/pardon them after they’ve done his dirty work is a fool. He’s one-way transactional: you do stuff for him and he may or may not help you out. Probably not because he’ll already be focused on the next thing

I mean, he pardoned Steve Bannon for the federal defrauding donors case but didn’t pardon the three other conspirators. I’d be wary of banking on a pardon unless I’m very well connected to Trump

Would you bet on a pardon from Trump though? Maybe if you’re at the top but I think the foot soldiers doing the actual work would be left out

Plus there were all sorts of tantalizing related stories, most of which are completely ironic at the point: what if she was indicted before the election? What if she was CONVICTED? What if she was IN PRISON?? Then we had the James Comey story arc at the last minute. (2/2)

I just don’t think this will be the narrative up until the election. We’re on day 7 right now but it’s kind of a boring and “yeah, duh he’s old” narrative already. I don’t think it’s as sticky as “but her emails!” because Hillary was a woman and also was Hillary Clinton. (1/2)

I especially liked this part from the (voting) hypocrite on not voting: “My indifference is, among other things, a reflection of my view that the real problems in American life are deep-seated and structural.” Why. Do. You. Think. That. Is.

You don’t need to rub your fancy high school experience in my face. I didn’t even *realize* there was other pasta art that wasn’t based on egg pasta until I went to college. Elitist.

There’s a clip from that Born Rich” documentary where Ivanka is giving a tour of her childhood bedroom. She’s happily reminiscing, describing all of the posters and tchotchkes, etc., then there’s a recognizable vocal and body language shift when she says “and there’s my bed”. It’s really disturbing

Obviously the shredding stunt made the piece more valuable but the video of everyone being shocked as it started to get destroyed after final bidding was worth it. I’m not sure what you mean by “not that profound” but it was a unique event, it doesn’t need to say anything

I understand your reaction to Wolf Hall (the “he” and the Thomases) but once I figured it out and sank into the rhythm (after ~50 pages) I really enjoyed it. The initial challenge reminded me of Saramago’s Blindness in which the conventions are unfamiliar but engross you once you’ve acclimated
